History of Gran Canaria Airport

Soon after World War I ended, the French and Spanish governments gave Frenchman Pierre George Latécoére permission to launch an airline service connecting France with its former African and South American colonies. In 1919, the first segment of this route, Toulouse to Casablanca, was launched with layovers in Barcelona, Alicante, and Malaga.

The Canary Islands were planned as a layover and connection to the United States on the second leg, which went from Casablanca to Dakar. In April 1930, the Gando land and sea facilities were designated as a national airport by Royal Decree.

The first passenger flight was in 1933, and by 1935, the route had become the established Madrid-Canary Islands connection. In 1934, a radio-electric station was given the green light to begin servicing Gando Airport after installing the first navigation aids.

It is estimated that construction on the terminal began in 1944 and was completed in 1946. As a result of this separation of civil and military activities, the airline offices previously housed at the Lanzarote Air Station have been relocated to the airport itself. The airport was designated as a customs airport for both domestic and international flights thanks to a July 1946 decree.

The first 700 meters of the runway were paved in 1948, and by June 1957, the entire 2,000-meter runway had been paved. Once this upgrade was completed, the airport would be considered a category two facility. In the same year, upgrades were implemented to the control tower, the power plant, and the navigational aids.

The runway's current length of 3,100 meters was built in 1960. The following year, an emergency services park was constructed. Because of this upgrade, the airport was promoted to the "first-category" status. The airfield's perimeter was enclosed, and a power plant and taxiway were constructed the following year.

At the close of 1966, construction began on the tower's control rooms. Until that point, travelers had used the terminal and tower built together in 1946. The transmitter station was constructed the following year.

Construction of the current terminal began in 1970. In addition, the runway and taxiway's outer edges were modified to accommodate the growing number of jet aircraft. In March of 1973, the brand-new terminal opened to domestic flights. Once the second runway was opened in 1980, passenger traffic exploded.

There will be a significant investment of over 900 million euros to enhance Aena's Canary Islands airport network. The extension to Gran Canaria airport is a key part of the Canary Island Airport Infrastructure Plan of the Ministry of Public Works.

New airbridges were installed to provide direct access to planes. The check-in and arrivals hall was expanded as part of the renovation. Airport and parking lot access roads were also upgraded.
